Odie has been a great puppy so far. He is so adorable that its hard not to spoil him. Specially when he does something as cute as picking up several different toys from the lower bins at PetSmart before picking out one to carry through the rest of the store. He dropped it when we walked up to the register as if he was placing it down to be paid for.
Odie has a pretty good size basket of toys already (most of stolen stuff animals from Riley’s room) but we’ve been really good about not spoiling him with people food or edible treats. Anything we have given Odie as a snack has been gluten free. I just don’t see the point in risking exposure to gluten when there are so many gluten free dog treats out there. Some of which I feel are labeled clearer than our gluten free foods.
Nylabone is one of the companies that have clearly labeled gluten free treats and snacks. I came across these Puppy Formula Nutri Dent Chews at my local Big Lots. For $3 I decided to get them for Odie. I was worried that since hes such a chewer that he’d be done with it in no time. They are actually pretty tough so he’s distracted by it for quite some time. Anything that distracts him, calms his chewing, cleans his teeth and reduces puppy breath is an A+ in my book. Odie seems to enjoy them as well.
These Healthy Edibles are little heart shaped softer snacks/treats. They are probably about a 50 cent piece or vanilla wafer size. I would take these to work with me for the first week or so and give him one shortly after we arrived. It was a treat to reward him for a good car ride and to ease him into being at the office. I like how few ingredients are in them. He really seems to enjoy them and they have lasted quite awhile.
I can’t find the Healthy Edibles Regular Chews on their website. (Maybe I’m not looking in the right spot.) They are softer than the bones they carry but not as soft as the little heart treats. The regular chews were probably his favorite since he’d go crazy and then sit for one anytime he saw the bag.
I also bought him a bag of the Healthy Edibles Bacon Bones. The front of the bag say gluten free, however the first ingredient is wheat starch. I have an email into Nylabone as their twitter suggested. I’ll do a post on that once I have a reply.
